Associate Legal Counsel – Tokyo (Japon)

About the role

Airbnb is seeking an Associate Legal Counsel to join its global legal team in Tokyo. Reporting to the Associate General Counsel for Northeast Asia, you will act as a trusted legal partner for multiple business functions, providing practical advice that balances legal risk with business priorities.

Key responsibilities

• Provide clear, effective legal guidance to teams such as business development, public policy, marketing, and communications.
• Advise on regulatory matters, consumer protection, competition law, marketing compliance, employment, privacy, dispute resolution, and law‑enforcement interactions.
• Conduct legal risk assessments and propose pragmatic solutions that support business objectives.
• Collaborate closely with regional and global legal colleagues to ensure consistent legal strategy.

Required profile

• Qualified lawyer (bengoshi) in Japan.
• Native‑level proficiency in Japanese (written and spoken).
• Business‑level English proficiency; high TOEIC/TOEFL scores are a plus.
• 2–5 years of post‑qualification experience, preferably in‑house or seconded from a law firm, within an MNC or start‑up environment.

Required skills

• Strong knowledge of Japanese corporate, regulatory, and privacy law.
• Ability to translate complex legal concepts into actionable business advice.
• Excellent analytical and risk‑assessment capabilities.
