Chief Privacy Officer (Director, Security Engineering)

About the role

Coupang Japan is looking for a Chief Privacy Officer to build and lead the Digital Trust team in Japan. The role starts as a highly autonomous individual contributor who designs the privacy and security operating model and then grows a dedicated team as the business scales. It reports directly to the Japan CISO and covers internal security practices and operations, with the main owner of security engagements with regulators and government bodies. The company is Rocket Now, a fee-free food delivery service operated by CP One Japan, Coupang's Japanese subsidiary.

Key responsibilities

• Own and maintain privacy and security policies aligned with the Japan Act on the Protection of Personal Information (APPI) and global standards.
• Lead the Privacy Information Management System (PIMS) lifecycle and the Privacy Mark (P-Mark) certification, including documentation, internal audits and remediation.
• Drive privacy reviews and impact assessments across products and operations in Japan.
• Manage the end-to-end privacy and security incident lifecycle, including assessment, regulatory reporting and remediation.
• Partner with KR and TW regional teams to implement and localise privacy and security programmes.
• Serve as the main liaison with regulators, including the Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC).
• Engage with government and policy stakeholders on Coupang's cybersecurity and privacy posture.

Required profile

• More than 5 years of experience in privacy and security compliance, including leading large-scale solutions with cross-functional teams.
• Strong understanding of Japanese privacy regulations, including APPI.
• Experience in privacy reviews and incident management.
• Fluent Japanese and business-level English.
• Preferred: security-related certifications such as 個人情報保護士, CIPP/C, CIPP/E or CIPM; experience engaging with regulators; background in e-commerce or cross-border environments.
