Precision Coating Specialist – Advanced Materials

About the role

3M is seeking a Precision Coating Specialist to lead coating process development, prototyping, and scale‑up within its Corporate R&D organization. You will work on a variety of products—including adhesives, films, tapes, and functional materials—across automotive, industrial, electronics, and consumer markets.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and optimize coating processes for diverse product lines.
• Evaluate coating conditions considering material properties, liquid characteristics, substrate behavior, drying parameters, and film thickness control.
• Conduct laboratory and pilot‑scale trials, analyze data, and support scale‑up to manufacturing.
• Perform root‑cause analysis of coating defects, propose improvements, and verify solutions.
• Assist with the introduction of new coating equipment, including specification review, start‑up evaluation, and process condition establishment.
• Collaborate with R&D, manufacturing, quality, process engineering, and global technical teams.
• Provide operational and safety guidance to operators and technicians on pilot coaters.
• Prepare technical reports and communicate findings to internal stakeholders and customers.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
• Strong analytical mindset with experience in experimental design and data interpretation.
• Ability to work cross‑functionally and communicate technical information clearly.
