Legal Counsel II (Principal Legal Counsel)

About the role

Medtronic is hiring a Legal Counsel II (Principal Legal Counsel) for its Tokyo headquarters in Shinagawa, within the Medtronic Legal team. As part of Medtronic EurAsia Legal, you will handle legal matters for a specific business unit or department, acting as a trusted business partner for the company's mission.

Key responsibilities

• Provide legal advice and counsel to internal business clients on corporate legal rights, obligations and privileges
• Draft contracts covering leases, licenses, purchases and sales, real estate, employment, insurance, M&A, marketing and advertising agencies, R&D and related matters
• Stay current on legislation, statutes, decisions and ordinances of quasi-judicial bodies
• Analyze legal data to decide whether to defend or prosecute a lawsuit
• Act as the company's agent in various transactions
• Advise on risk assessment and anti-trust regulations
• May develop, review or implement training programmes, oversee corporate governance and its committees, and work with outside counsel

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree or higher in any field
• A lawyer's qualification in at least one jurisdiction (Japanese bar qualification)
• Native-level Japanese and business-level English (further study possible)
• 2 to 7 years of experience in law firms or corporate legal departments
• Leadership: the ability to judge what needs to be done and lead others
• Proactive attitude toward learning about medical device business

Nice to have

• Experience supporting pharmaceutical or medical device businesses
• Basic knowledge of the Pharmaceutical Affairs Act and competition law
• Experience representing clients in civil litigation, especially product liability cases
• Experience working in an English-speaking environment
