About the role
Monocle Radio is seeking a bilingual Japanese‑English journalist and producer to join its Tokyo bureau. The role will support the station’s news and global‑affairs coverage across Japan and the wider region.
Key responsibilities
- Plan, book, produce and output daily news programmes and weekly magazine shows covering international affairs, business, culture and design.
- Identify compelling stories and contributors, maintain a network of contacts across Japan and Asia, and shape the editorial angle of each piece.
- Manage the daily news operation, including forward planning, breaking‑news response and coordinating newsreader schedules.
- Present, report and conduct on‑air interviews, delivering a confident broadcast style.
- Collaborate with London, Bangkok and other Monocle teams, and travel as needed for reporting, production and live events.
Required profile
- Professional fluency in Japanese and English, with ability to interview and write in both languages.
- Previous experience in broadcast journalism or radio production within an international newsroom.
- Strong editorial judgement and ability to spot original story angles.
- Comfort presenting, interviewing and reporting on air.
- Existing network of contacts across Japan, Asia and international markets.
