Credit Analyst - Japanese Corporate Bonds

About the role

Manulife Investment Management, Japan is hiring a Credit Analyst to analyse mainly Japanese companies and provide investment recommendations. The analyst also helps build platforms that generate multifaceted investment ideas. The position reports to the Head of Credit Research, Japan, and is a hybrid arrangement.

Key responsibilities

• Write fully ESG-integrated credit reports on mainly Japanese corporate bond issuers, using the internal rating model and qualitative and quantitative analysis; some reports must be written in English.
• Conduct semi-macro research and industry analysis that supports individual credit analysis.
• Analyse covenants, subordination and similar terms.
• Perform relative value analysis and spread valuation based on fundamental credit analysis and financial market data.
• Provide timely investment recommendations to Portfolio Managers.
• Take part in bond issuers' investor relations meetings and keep in touch with rating agencies and sell-side equity and credit analysts.
• Carry out active stewardship, such as ESG engagement.
• Produce daily, weekly and monthly reports for internal meetings with Bloomberg and Nikkei Quick, and other explanatory materials for external meetings, some in English.

Required profile

• At least 5 years of credit or equity analysis experience at financial institutions and/or rating agencies; experience at an active fixed income manager is preferable; equity analysis experience helps.
• CFA, CMA or MBA preferred.
• Native Japanese and fluent English required.
• Objective, self-starting and communicative, able to work with peers including overseas colleagues.
