Freelance Japanese Language Instructor (One-to-One)

About the role

STAR7, a language service provider founded more than 20 years ago, is recruiting a freelance Japanese language instructor to teach in person to an adult student in Tokyo. The course runs once a week on Sundays for 2 hours, starting as soon as possible at the beginning of June, with a maximum of 75 hours by December 2026. The assignment may open up further opportunities with other students, virtual and in person.

Key responsibilities

• Design and deliver engaging one-to-one lessons tailored to the student's level, goals and learning style.
• Focus on improving fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar.
• Monitor progress and give regular feedback to support continuous improvement.
• Encourage active participation and build the student's confidence in speaking and understanding Japanese.
• Adapt teaching methods and pace to the student's evolving needs.
• Maintain clear and professional communication with the student and project manager.

Required profile

• Native or near-native proficiency in Japanese.
• Proven experience teaching Japanese as a second language, preferably one-to-one.
• A degree in Japanese, Education, Linguistics or a related field is a plus.
• TEFL/TESOL certification or equivalent is preferred.

Required skills

• Strong knowledge of Japanese grammar, pronunciation and usage.
• Ability to create engaging, personalized lesson plans.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, patience and flexibility.
