Software Engineer - Web Search Group

About the role

Rakuten Web Search (RWS) provides search and advertising services to users in Japan. As a Software Engineer in the Web Search Group, you will join a cross-functional team to design, develop and improve web applications and next-generation AI-powered experiences, covering the full software development lifecycle from requirements analysis and technical design to implementation, testing, deployment and production support.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, test and maintain scalable full-stack web applications using Java, Spring Boot and React.
• Develop backend REST APIs and microservices with Spring Boot and related Java technologies.
• Build responsive frontend applications with React, JavaScript/TypeScript and modern frontend practices.
• Work through the SDLC, including requirements analysis, technical design, implementation, testing, deployment and production support.
• Design database solutions using relational databases and NoSQL/KVS technologies.
• Analyse business requirements and user behaviour, and propose technical and product improvements.
• Write well-designed, testable code and develop unit, integration and API tests.
• Take part in code reviews, technical discussions and architecture/design reviews.
• Maintain technical documentation such as design documents, API specifications and sequence diagrams.
• Collaborate with Product Managers, Data Scientists and ML Engineers on AI-powered product capabilities.
• Provide first-level production support and monitor, troubleshoot and improve system performance, reliability and scalability.

Required profile

• 1-3 years of professional software development experience.
• Experience designing and developing RESTful APIs and web applications.
• Good understanding of software engineering fundamentals, OOP and design patterns.
• Ability to understand business requirements and turn them into technical solutions.
• Experience in an Agile/DevOps environment; good communication and problem-solving skills.
