Applied AI Engineer – Codex (Tokyo)

About the role

OpenAI’s Applied AI Engineering team in Tokyo is looking for an Applied AI Engineer focused on Codex. You will partner with leading engineering organizations to design, build and deploy AI‑powered software development workflows that reshape how code is written, tested and delivered.

Key responsibilities

• Collaborate with engineering leaders and developers to identify high‑value use cases for Codex and translate them into technical architectures, implementation plans and measurable success criteria.
• Design, prototype, evaluate and production‑scale AI‑driven coding workflows, integrations, automations and evaluation harnesses, often using Codex itself.
• Guide customers through the transition from experimental prototypes to reliable, observable production systems, ensuring security, reliability and cost efficiency.
• Lead technical workshops, deep‑dives and hands‑on enablement sessions to accelerate adoption of advanced AI coding workflows.
• Collect deployment insights and feed them back to OpenAI product, research and engineering teams to shape future Codex capabilities.

Required profile

• Proven experience delivering software or AI systems in enterprise settings, from prototype to production.
• Strong track record of hands‑on coding, architecture design, integration and debugging in complex environments.
• Fluent in both Japanese and English, with the ability to communicate technical concepts to engineers, leaders and executives.
